All cities, even small ones, boast a church that locals take pride in. St. John’s Church is a prime example in Cēsis, Latvia. A medieval architectural gem, it dates back to the early 13th century, marking the Christianization of the Baltics. Initially established as the Livonian Holy Order’s residence in Cēsis Castle, the city thrived as a crucial German power center from 1237 to 1561. Standing among the largest churches outside Riga, Latvia’s capital, St. John’s Church is distinguished by its massive 65-meter-high bell tower and a 15-meter-high Gothic spire.
From the first half of the 19th century, the church has captured attention as a historical and architectural monument. Today, it goes beyond the traditional role, hosting world-renowned choruses, organ music virtuosos, and serving as the venue for the International New Organ Player’s Festival and various art exhibitions.
