Riga Castle is a castle on the banks of River Daugava in Riga, the capital of Latvia. It is one of the largest medieval castles in Latvia with a long and exciting history. The castle was founded in early 14th century. It is not a surprise that several times it was destroyed and reconstructed again, losing and gaining old and new artistic and architectural features in the course of time. The Castle originally was a three-floor building, which enclosed a rectangular courtyard, and had four rectangular towers in its corners. Now there are only two towers left and rebuilt in round ones. The Latvian government declared the castle its residence in 1938 and even after all political transitions, today there is the official residence of the President of Latvia as well as home to several museums. Also, artworks of the 1920s and 1930s, such as the painted ceiling of the Hall of the Ambassadors and the gate of the castle, are especially valuable features of Riga Castle. Moreover, underground passageways have been discovered leading in various directions from the castle. Would be interesting to see not only the top but also the bottom of the castle right? People says that Riga Castle is a national architectural monument. Visit Riga and explore this marvellous city! Don’t miss the opportunity to discover more, book a tour from Baltic Tours!
