It is one of the most visited places in Riga’s city, renowned not only for its history but also for its architectural style. The architectural monument, Small Guild, stands in the very center of Old Rīga at Līvu Square. Founded in the 14th century, the Small Guild united Riga’s artisans, establishing rules governing their work. In 1888, under the leadership of the Small Guild’s senior, Fridrich Brunstermann, the interior was richly adorned and decorated. Prepare to be impressed! The lobby, entrance hall, and staircase feature terraco mosaic flooring laid by Italian masters. Stained-glass windows and other unique elements throughout will captivate you.
The Big Guild or St. Mary’s Guild, existing from 1354 until 1939, was the merchants’ brotherhood of Rīga. Gatherings in the Muenster Room, which remains in its original form in the Rīga Big Guild building, coexisted with the Small Guild or St. John’s Guild, the Association of Rīga master-craftsmen. The Guild’s Charter outlined its mission: fostering conviviality, genteel socializing, fasting, charity, and spirituality. Today, the Latvian Philharmonic is located here, serving as the rehearsal space for the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, hosting a variety of musical concerts.
