It is one of the most visiting places in Riga’s city. It is popular not only because of its history but also for the architectural style. The architectural monument – Small Guild stands in the very centre of the Old Rīga at Līvu Square. Small Guild was founded in the 14th century. It united Riga‘s artisans that enabled the rules, governing their work. The Small Guild interior was richly adorned and decorated in 1888 when the senior of the Small Guild was Fridrich Brunstermann. You will be impressed! The flooring of the lobby, entrance hall and staircase was made in terraco mosaic laid by the Italian masters. All the windows, which have got stained-glass panels and even more other specific elements will fascinate you!
The Big Guild or St. Mary’s Guild was the merchants brotherhood of Rīga that existed from 1354 till 1939. They were gatherings in the Muenster Room, which remains in its original form in the building of the Rīga Big Guild. It existed alongside the Small Guild or St. John’s Guild, the Association of Rīga master-craftsmen. The Guild’s Charter stipulated its mission: ”fostering conviviality, genteel socialising, fasting, charity, and spirituality”. Today here is located the Latvian Philharmonic. Here the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra is rehearsing, and a variety of musical concerts takes place. Book a tour from Baltic Tours and explore this charming capital of Latvia!
