Klaipėda is Lithuania’s third largest city, located in the north-western side of the country. It is a seaport, stopover point for cruise ships, and the gateway to the Curonian Spit. For most of its history, this city was called Mēmel. It is a German word for Mēmele’s river, which in Lithuanian is called Nemunas. The word Mēmele means “calm”, referring to the calm flow of this river.
Klaipeda Old Town is newer than those of Vilnius and Kaunas as it was largely consumed by the great fire of 1854. What you see now was rebuilt afterwards on a grid layout of narrow streets. Would be an interesting attraction to find pre-WW2 pictures of Klaipeda City and look at them during your tour in Old Town. Cosy streets and warm atmosphere will steal your heart. In a middle of the Old Town, you will see the Theatre Square with its stories shrouded statue. Enjoy local restaurants and bars, interact with people and get to know more about this spectacular marine city. Book a tour from baltictours.com and explore all the Lithuania’s west-coast.
