Kaunas Cathedral Basilica
Tours in Kaunas Cathedral Basilica
Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, also known as the Gothic Cathedral, is situated in Kaunas Old Town, near the Town Hall Square. While the exact date of its construction and the identity of its builders remain unknown, the cathedral was first mentioned in written sources in 1413. This largest Gothic-style building in Lithuania is dedicated to the apostles St. Paul and St. Peter. It underwent several instances of destruction and subsequent reconstruction, incorporating Renaissance features in later periods. Originally a simple church, it was elevated to cathedral status by Pope Leo XIII in 1895 and bestowed with the title of Basilica in 1926.
From the outside, the cathedral projects an image of solidity and sturdiness, but its interior reveals light colors, graceful forms, statues, and ornate plant-inspired ornamentation. Notably, the Cathedral houses a Neogothic mausoleum dedicated to Maironis, one of Lithuania's most renowned romantic poets, located near the chapel wall. Recognized for its cultural significance, Kaunas Cathedral Basilica was included on the Registry of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of the Republic of Lithuania in 1996. Embark on a tour with us to explore the city of Kaunas, discovering its renowned buildings and immersing yourself in the rich history preserved by these magnificent monuments.
