For those who likes exclusive and a bit shocking places this would be one of the best destinations. Grūtas Park is a sculpture garden of Soviet-era statues and an exposition of other Soviet ideological relics. After Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, various Soviet statues were taken down and dumped in different places. Entrepreneur Viliumas Malinauskas created a unique idea in his head and requested the Lithuanian authorities to grant him the possession of the sculptures so that he could build a privately financed museum. Luckily, he got this permission and now we have a unique park, which was founded in 2001 just near the resort city of Druskininkai in a forested area. All 20 hectares of the park area is reminiscent of severe Siberia conditions with its guard towers, fragments of concentration camps and other Soviet elements plentiful all over the place. The exposition, consisting of 86 statues by 46 different sculptors, are organised into spheres, depending on the theme and period. The aim of this exposition is to provide an opportunity for Lithuanian people, visitors coming to our country as well as future generations to see the naked Soviet ideology, which suppressed and hurt the spirit of our nation for many decades. It’s absolutely thought-provoking, right? And it touches every visitor, resulting in a wide range of emotions. Book a tour from Baltic Tours and try a different kind of attractions in Lithuania.
