Dome Cathedral

Tours in Dome Cathedral

Throughout the centuries, people have regarded Riga as the place to connect with the divine. The Dome Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Riga, stands as one of the oldest sacred buildings in Latvia and the Baltics from the medieval period. Its foundation stone was laid in 1211, marking the beginning of its expansion into the Riga Cathedral Ensemble, with the addition of the monastery, the Riga Cathedral School, and other structures.

The architecture of Riga Cathedral is a blend of Romanesque, Early Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles. In the 14th-15th century, it transformed into a Basilica, and its tower soared to a height of 140 meters, making it the tallest tower in Riga at that time. While strolling through Riga's Old City, you'll notice roosters perched on the spires of churches; the rooster is a symbol of Riga and, on the Riga Cathedral, also serves as a weathercock, always facing the wind.

Apart from its religious significance, the Dome Cathedral has played a role in cultural activities. For centuries, it has been a main venue for musical festivals in Riga and Latvia, a tradition that continues today. Book a tour with us and embark on a journey through the Baltic States.
