In heart of the marine city of Klaipėda, in a middle of well known Theatre Square stands a fountain with a young woman statue inside. This statue represents one of the characters from Simon Datch’s poems. Simon was a 17th-century Prussian poet who was born in Klaipėda’s city. The story tells that he fell in love with a young woman that he saw in the Theatre Square just in front of eloquent Town Hall. As we all know, all the writers like to mention their lovers in their works, so it’s not an exception that he wrote a poem about that fascinating woman. In the 20th century when sculptors decided to create a statue dedicated for Simon Datch, they chose to bring Anna character for a new life. Unfortunately, this statue is not the original one. The first one was destroyed and later restored in 1989. Now, on the column, you will see a portrait medallion of Simon Datch for the reason not to separate the lovers. Interesting note: if you are familiar with the writer, this statue has little meaning for the viewer. Book a tour and explore this lovely marine city with its remarkable places. Maybe after the visit in the Square you will start to read Simon’s poems?
