The Fagernes with the population of 1801 inhabitants located in the municipality of Nord-Aurdal is a regional centre in Valdres province with cafes, restaurants, shops, shopping center and folk museum. It is, therefore, possible to combine the good Valdres experiences with a little more urban pleasure for those who choose to live in the area in and around Fagernes. There are also good opportunities for hiking, fishing and swimming. Not only is this the area in Valdres with the highest population density, but along with nearby areas like Leira, also a trading centre in the region.

There are many opportunities for activities at Fagernes and many things to do while being there. The town is situated down to Strandefjorden, which offers swimming, fishing, boat trips, etc. It is also closely linked to other scenic surroundings that offer nice hiking, cross-country skiing, crossings, etc. Most of these things are free, such as hiking, for example. Valdres Folk Museum is one of the famous historical places and one of the most visited places in Fagernes region. With over 100 old houses, Valdres Folk Museum is one of the largest of its kind in Norway. Here you get close to sheep, pigs, calves and hens in the “Kviistunet”, while the Munkekroen and the cafe provide food of the highest Valdres quality. Local youth offers live folk music and dance throughout the summer. The museum also benefits from its idyllic location on “Storøya” and has a 1.2-kilometer long nature trail around the island. At the end of July each year, the folk music festival “Jørn Hilme-stemnet” is arranged at the museum.

The park and Vesleøya are another places which are recommended to visit while staying in Fagernes. On late summer days, the park and Vesleøya are a favourite for locals. Here you will find a playful playground and sand volleyball court.

Kviteberg is a famous place in Fagernes.The one who gets plenty of lazy days in the park can take the trip up to Kviteberg. Although the trip is not particularly long (about 1.5 hours) it offers exceptional views of Fagernes, Leira and Strandefjorden. The trail is well marked with signs and information boards.

Strondafjorden is a lake located in the municipalities of Nord-Aurgal and Vestre Slidre in Okplann County, Norway. The lake is part of the Begna watershed. The north-western end of the lake crosses the bridge of Ulns. It has an area of 13.24 km ² and is 46.01 km. It is located at an altitude of 355 m above sea level. It is unique and one of the most beautiful places in Norway.

One more amazing place you definitely should visit in Norway is a Jotunheimen National Park located in mountains. It is a beautiful place, where you can enjoy the amazing view and have fun almost for free. The name of the area is translated as “The House of Giants”. This name was given to this mountainous, untouched land by the Norwegian poet O.O. Vinje. Archaeologists argue that the mountain range was inhabited in 3000 BC. The territory of the National Park, in which a large number of high mountains is concentrated (over 2000 meters), has an area of ​more than 3 thousand square kilometres. The highest peaks are Gallheppigen (2469 meters) and Glitterthund (2464 meters). In the area, there are many waterfalls, picturesque lakes and rivers, glaciers and valleys, drowning in a herbage. Local lakes and rivers abound in trout. According to the widely recognized opinion, these places are the most picturesque in Europe. The first hut in this area was created by the Norwegian Tourist Society in 1869. In 1980, the mountainous massif became a national park.

Like in any most tourist visited places of Norway, you will find many places to eat while visiting Fagernes. There is probably no dining spot with Michelin stars in this place, however, you can have a meal which you will remember for long. Chefs serving traditional, homemade food are not uncommon here. With the use of local foods from Valdres, there are many eateries and restaurants in Fagernes that can sharpen the taste buds. One of the amazing places to eat in Fagernes is  Munkekroen. It is not cheap to eat there, however, the service, food and view through the window stand out. Munkekroen is located at the Folk Folk Museum.

Briskeby Cafe has a nice atmosphere to enjoy while eating. Clean and tidy. The food is very good if you like some spicy food. Also, Briskeby Cafe offers great Danish pastries and other bakings that work well as a dessert or for coffee.

Fagernes cafe and Chinese restaurant Shan Shao Rong are two amazing places to eat some Asian food if you are not a big admirer of Scandinavian cuisine.

Gjestegarden Fagernes AS  is one of the few places at Fagernes where you can have traditional dinner with boiled potatoes, something that may be a good change to pizza, hamburger and kebab.

The advises and recommendations are very common. If you going to Fagernes in winter, have warm clothes with you, summer demands having comfortable hiking shoes, as Fagernes is for walkers mostly and rarely for drivers. And lost but not least, food is not cheap as well as drinks, so if you are on a budget trip, keep it in mind. Also, considering that Fagerness is the excellent place for hiking, following a few simple rules will make your experience unforgettable and save.
