Well, it truly seems like that… Compelling UNESCO-protected monastery and tempting Intercession Church located in Bogolyubovo could be described as a absolute masterpiece of Russian architecture. These are one of the reasons to visit Bogolyubovo. Still not sure if you want to come and travel? Let us tell you, that one of the famous, medieval Russian capitals Vladimir is only 10 minutes drive from Bogolyubovo. Doesn’t it sound like a perfect travel? Writing an article about one of the old Russian architectural pearls – small town Bogolyubovo was a quite intriguing quest. Tiny place, which might be hardly spotted on a map in a fast way, has not much information about itself. However, small size does not downplay the significance of Bogolyubovo in case if you are an admirer of a small cosy place with lots of churches and pretty meadows and hills around.
Bogolyubovo is located on the right bank of the Nerl River, a few kilometers from its confluence with the Klyazma. On the southern side of the village, at the foot of the hill, passes the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railway and the Bogolyubovo station. Behind the railway, there is a meadow, on which stands the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl. The old Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod highway runs parallel to the railway, right across the village, and within the boundaries of Bogolyubovo is named after Lenin Street.
Bogolyubovo is hard could be called a city or town, it is a small village with a population of about 4,000 people. Since the XIII century, the life of Bogolyubov is closely connected with his “city-forming enterprise” – the Bogolyubsky monastery, the image of which has changed greatly over the centuries. The monastery ensemble is the main architectural dominant of the village.
The best way to get to Bogolyiubovo is by car or by bus. There are several Vladimir city buses – in particular, No. 103 and 152, by which you can get to Bogolyubovo. The town may be easily spotted by Bogolyubsky monastery.
There are not many official hotels in Bogolyubovo, but no worries, there is a much better place to stay than a comfortable room in the five-star guest house – an opportunity to spend the night in the Holy Bogolyubsky Monastery as a novice. Although you will have to pay for such pleasure as well.
In Bogolyubovo there are several cafes. “Otrada” and cafe “Dacha” which is located in the historical center of the village of Bogolyubovo near the world-famous monuments of architecture – the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, opposite the Holy Bogolyubsky Monastery.
Considering it’s small size and not such a big variety of sightseeings, there are not many places where you could go to Bogolyubovo. Currently, the village of Bogolyubovo – an obligatory stage of the tourist route “Golden Ring of Russia”. The most important sights of Bogolyubov: the ensemble of the Holy Bogolyubsky Women’s Monastery with monuments of the XII century. – The stair tower and the gallery where Andrei Bogolyubsky perished; Most of the buildings of the monastery – the fence with towers, the gate Church of the Assumption, the cells, the bell tower and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin – belong to the 18-19 centuries. However, the monastery includes two unique monuments of the 12th century – fragments of the former white-stone palace. To this day the staircase tower with thread (under the bell tower) and the gallery adjoining it have reached.
The remains of the prince’s castle are a unique monument of civil architecture of the 12th century. Tourists can climb a spiral staircase decorated with paintings. Picturesque paintings tell of the conspiracy and murder of Prince Bogolyubsky. It was on this ladder that the deadly wounded prince descended, trying to hide from the conspirators. Once there was a passage to the Palace Cathedral from the staircase. Stunning temple, painted with frescoes and lined with copper tiles, existed until 1722, when the then rector ordered the windows to be enlarged for high illumination. Church of the Intercession on the Nerli of the XII century, standing on a hill among the protected Bogolyubsky meadow. Church of the Intercession on the Nerli – one of the most beautiful in Russia. It is located on a hill near the confluence of the Nerl in the Klyazma, in the midst of the meadow, a mile and a half from the monastery. You can only reach on foot. Access by car is prohibited, the nearest parking lot is at the railway platform. Also don’t forget to see the remnants of serf earthen ramparts and moats of Bogolyubov-city of XII century. Architectural monuments of Bogolyubov are in charge of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve.
Apparently, there is nothing to do – just walk around the fields in search of a better perspective of the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl or swim in the river (next to the Church of the Intercession there are good sandy beaches). All theaters, cinemas and entertainment complexes are located in nearby Vladimir.
Despite its ancient history and tourist significance, Bogolyubovo remains an ordinary Russian settlement, which leaves an imprint on the situation. Appear in Bogolyubovo in the dark is not recommended, and there is no need, because the tourist facilities are closed, and there is no infrastructure. A night walk to the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl is quite romantic, but it takes place on a completely unlighted road and requires some care. In the daytime, there are many tourists in Bogolyubovo, and therefore it is safe, although beggars are very intrusive and even aggressive.
Though one very popular proverb states, that “Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.” Being sure that during your trip through Venice’s water labyrinths or visiting best Gelato café in Florence you will not stay with only wind in your pocket gives more confidence.
