Everybody knows William Shakespeare and Paulo Coelho but did you ever hear about Thomas Mann? No? It’s time to learn more. He is a famous German writer – novelist. In 1929 he came to Lithuania for the first time and he stayed with his family in Curonian spit as it was an attractive destination for holidays for Germans. He was so impressed with this place that he decided to build a summerhouse here. Coincidence is that the same year he won Nobel Prize of Literature and invested those proceeds to his holiday house project. He spent three summers (1930-1932) in his handsome villa and continued writing his works enjoying the view of Curonian lagoon through the window. In the memoir, he wrote, ‘we were so much thrilled by indescribable originality and beauty of that nature, by fantastic world of wandering dunes and by elks living in the pine woods’. This house stands on a Mother-in-law hill and it’s a memorial museum. Its collection is made up of photos, books, and copies of documents reflecting life and works of Thomas Mann’s. Book the tour from Baltic Tours, get to know this talented writer and may you will be impressed by the Curonian split nature as much as he was.
