Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the small bronze statue of Mermaid is a symbol of Denmark. More than 1 meter tall and almost 200 kilograms weight Little Mermaid is a first thing to see on your travel to Copenhagen. Little Mermaid is a popular attraction among tourists and locals since 1913. Danish Brewer Carl Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg beer, was so impressed by the ballet of the Little Mermaid so he asked the sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a statue. The body of a Little Mermaid was in fact modelled after the sculptor’s beloved wife Eline. For your interest, the famous Little Mermaid statue turned 100 in 2013. It is not a secret, that the Little Marmaid statue is the most photographed object in the whole Denmark. Locals believe that more than 5 million snaps are being taken per year.
Can you believe it? It’s just insane! How do they even track it? Well, let’s say it’s just a local legend… To be more serious, The Little Mermaid is a tragic love story, where Mermaid gives up her voice in exchange for a pair of legs. Today, she is sitting on a granite stone in the old harbour and waiting for her prince or those, who visit Copenhagen. Make her dreams come true – when you are planning a travel to Copenhagen make sure you are not about to miss a chance to meet the statue of Little Mermaid!
