Here it is – our vintage history of our office building! It is easy to say that Baltic Tours is a very unique and exceptional travelling agency. Since the day our company opened its doors over 25 years ago, we kept a very personal outlook on the tourism industry, and we are proud to call the Baltic Tours a very innovative and original business. This company has always been a very active supporter of culture, science and active sports. We are aiming for a better, more positive and diverse way of both work and living. So it only seems fitting, that the headquarters of the Baltic Tours travelling agency, are located in a historical, a very exceptional and unique house in Vilnius.
The historical building dates back to 1946 and was built underlying the orders of Stalin himself. The idea was to create a very prestigious home for scientists and science enthusiasts. Vladislovas Mikučianis – the chief architect of Vilnius, with the help of his colleagues from St. Petersburg, began creating the design of the beautiful baroque building. Constructions launched in 1947 and the first residents inhabited the house in 1950. The reason for this unusually long construction was caused by the fact, that the building was manufactured by German captives who needed constant supervision.
It is no secret that Vilnius is and always was a stunning city. So when designing the historical home for scientists, Russian architects paid very much attention to little details, in order to make this building fit into the overall baroque scene of Vilnius. A lot of attention was focused on the creation of the tower for the building – the idea was to build a summer‘s cafe on the top floor and a winter time cafe on the bottom floor, for residents to enjoy. Unfortunately, these plans remained only plans forever. However, the rest of the spectacular building was made to be absolutely extraordinary. Huge luxurious apartments were decorated in the most modern manner; every detail was taken into consideration. The help had it‘s own entrances and rooms so that the upper-class residents wouldn‘t be disturbed. The outside of the house was created to fit the needs of future inhabitants. Spacious garages, a fountain in the back yard, tennis courts and a little park were established in the territory. The architects made sure to design a very upscale home for the upper-class residents – everything was made to be exclusive and one of a kind. All was done in order to celebrate the importance of science and culture.
A lot of upper-class families expressed a desire to live in this prestigious house. However, the residents were picked very carefully and were all people of great accomplishments. A scientist Juozas Balčikonis, economy specialist Dzidas Budrys, microbiologist Vytautas Girdijauskas, a famous sculptor Juozas Mikėnas, a painter Irena Trečiokaitė, a historian Juozas Žiugžda and many more extraordinary people of culture and science lived in the historic house.
The Baltic Tours team is proud to own premices in such an important historical building. We are happy to carry on the legacy, of trying to make science, culture and travelling prosper. Baltic Tours take pride to be located in such an extraordinary and remarkable building, and we can‘t help but hope, that our company will add up to the rich history and tradition of the scientist home.
